Apple roses are scenic and easy-to-prepare sweets based on puff pastry, apples, sugar, and cinnamon.

These aren’t traditionally Italian but are enjoyed by many in Italy, and I would assume the rest of the world because who doesn’t like cinnamon?

My children are less excited about Thanksgiving itself and more excited about the fact that they will have off.

The school has been keeping them busy, even on the weekends, so they will probably sleep the whole holiday off.

However, I am thinking about what I could cook during the holiday. You all will get to see a lot of special Italian dishes that will still stick with the Thanksgiving theme but still have that Italian flare. So, I hope you’re as excited as I am!

For antipasto, I thought of making one of my favorite Sicilian dishes, Caponata.

Then, my children personally requested Lasagna for the main course. I still have to think of some more, but I have these delicious apple roses flavored with cinnamon and maple syrup for dessert.

To make these delicate and yummy apple roses, I used ready-made puff pastry to optimize time and obtain an excellent result with minimum effort.

    • Melt a knob of butter in a non-stick pan, add the sugar and let it melt over low heat.
    • Add the apple slices, sprinkle them with cinnamon, and wait for them to cook until soft.
    • Unroll the ready-made puff pastry on a smooth work surface and cut it into horizontal strips of about 9 x 2 inches.
    • Arrange the apple slices on half of each strip, the latter being previously brushed with maple syrup.
    • Fold the bottom of the strips back to the same height as the one below.
    • Roll the strip tightly from one short end to the other so as to make a rose, seal the flap of dough well to close the rose.
    • Arrange the roses, properly spaced, on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
    • Sprinkle them with more granulated sugar and cinnamon and bake in a preheated oven at 170°C (340°F) for about 50-60 minutes or 200°C (400°F) for 40 minutes.
